new Playa Flamingo Marina Costa Rica

The new Playa Flamingo Marina is our region’s newest and most state-of-the-art marina, home to everything from boats and tours to restaurants and an Outdoor Club pool and bar.

Adventure enthusiasts, anglers, and ocean wanderers – did you know that Costa Rica’s north Pacific Coast recently inaugurated the new, state-of-the-art Playa Flamingo Marina? Located between Playa Potrero and Flamingo Beach, the marina marks Guanacaste’s latest and most modern aquatic playground. And we can’t wait to show you around!

But first, a point of clarification: There’s an old Flamingo Marina – but this isn’t that! The region’s original marina first opened in the 1970s and reigned until 2004, when it closed. In 2007, plans were finalized on the new Playa Flamingo Marina and just 15 years later, it’s finally open and welcoming visitors.

This new iteration is Costa Rica’s newest marina and one of the most well-served and upscale, equipped with 184 slips, floating docks, fuel, and immigration & customs services, as well as a full suite of restaurants, stores, Marina Flamingo Village, and a VIP Club. It’s a 6.2-acre and 15,000 m2 (over 161,000 square feet) oceanside wonderland you’ll love to explore.

Playa Flamingo Marina: The Basics

Located on the southwestern tip of Playa Potrero, just adjacent to the soft sands of Playa Flamingo, the new marina serves travelers to Hacienda Pinilla, Tamarindo, Flamingo, and Playas del Coco, as well as the entire Nicoya Peninsula.

(Traveling further north or south? You’re likely looking for the Papagayo Marina, in the country’s far north, or the Los Sueños Marina, in Playa Herradura near Jacó.)

Among the marina’s many amenities, you’ll find:

  • 184 boat slips and floating docks
  • Electric, water & WiFi hookups
  • High-speed marine fuel dock
  • Full immigration & customs services
  • VIP Marina Lounge
  • Onsite ship store
  • Controlled access & 24-hour professional security
  • Golf cart transportation
  • Fish-cleaning station

Additionally, the new Playa Flamingo Marina hosts an incredible Marina Resort Village, with onsite restaurants, an exclusive Outdoor Club pool and bar, and other recreational facilities.

Enjoy Your Visit: Playa Flamingo Marina Activities

When you visit the Hacienda Pinilla / Tamarindo / Flamingo area, you’ll likely be spending a lot of time at and around the new marina.

That’s because this area of the country is famous for its world-class sport fishing, dolphin and whale-watching tours, surfing, sailing and catamaran tours, turtle nesting and turtle hatching, scuba diving, and a lot more.

Here are some of our favorites:

Sportfishing: Catch Your Next Big One!

Deep Sea Fishing

Both inshore and offshore fishing charters run out of the new Playa Flamingo Marina

One of our most requested tours! Guanacaste is the reigning king of Costa Rica’s sportfishing, and the Playa Flamingo Marina is the new epicenter for both deep-sea and nearshore fishing. We’ll help you book a charter and, depending on your destination and the season, you can cast your reel for blue, black, and striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado (wahoo), roosterfish, snapper, grouper, and other species.

Our boats can accommodate sportfishing groups of 4 to 15 people on 29-, 33-, 44-, and 50-foot boats. Full-day tours on our 29- and 33-foot boats include lunch, while full-service food and beverage services are included on full-day tours on our other boats.

Scuba Diving: Explore the Pacific’s Depths

A short boat ride from the Playa Flamingo Marina takes you to the famed Catalina Islands, one of Costa Rica’s most alluring dive sites.

Break the surface and dive deep – depending on the exact site, dives range from 40 to 100 feet in depth – because the visibility here averages 45 feet. And here, you’ll spot some of the country’s most prized and breathtaking species and sites, including massive rays, sharks, octopi, eel, and schools of colorful tropical fish. Two-tank dives depart at 7:45 a.m. and 1:45 a.m.

Turtle, Dolphin & Whale-Watching Tours: Explore the Deep

Experience one of Mother Nature’s (or Poseidon’s…) true wonders: Costa Rica’s spectacular and varied ocean wildlife, which extends to four species of sea turtles, two whale species, and five dolphin species.

Costa Rica’s nesting sea turtles, which come ashore to lay their eggs on Guanacaste’s beaches, include leatherback, olive ridley, hawksbill, and green sea turtles. Looking for bigger sites to spot? Keep your eyes open for humpback whales and the occasional (and rare) orca, as well as bottlenose dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins, false killer whales (which are really dolphins), and the always adorable spinner dolphins.

Catamaran Sailing: From Snorkeling to Sunset

There’s no better way to explore Costa Rica’s Pacific than on one of our beloved catamaran sailing tours. There are two daily departures: one in the mornings and one in the afternoons.

Morning tours depart early and are an excellent choice during the green or rainy season (typically, May through mid-November), when afternoon showers often hit. Sail toward the horizon and into a whole wide world of Pacific discoveries: Your talented captain knows just the spot for isolated beaches, living reefs, tiny islands, and protected swimming coves.

In the high and dry season (mid-November to May), our afternoon catamaran tours pack all the joy and exploration of a morning tour, paired with one of the world’s most brilliant sunsets. This is something you really, truly have to be there to see and believe! The fiery sun has never been so close.

Beach-Hopping and Beachcombing

Flamingo Marina Cove community vacation rentals

Want to stay close? Our Playa Flamingo vacation homes are some of our most exclusive and closest to the new marina

Did you know? Costa Rica has more than 1,000 kilometers (600+ miles) of coastline. And that makes the new Playa Flamingo Marina a great jumping-off point for beach-hopping around Guanacaste.

Whether you’re here for the sun or the sand or the palms or the waves, our Pacific beaches offer something to please and awe everyone. And, because so much of our coastline is rocky and rugged, many of the best beaches are totally secluded. And many are accessible only by boat (or very, very adventurous hiking boots).

So, gather your group and charter a boat out of the marina. Explore Costa Rica’s scenic coastline. Paired with the right captain, you’ll spend the entire day exploring the beaches, sands, and coasts that few every see. Take a stroll. Revel in the sun. Summit scenic lookout points. Do whatever it is your heart calls you to do!
